Following two explosions in General Santos on Sunday, a third bomb exploded only hours
before a Monday visit by President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, sparking apprehension in the city.
In the wake of the bombings, the president has ordered armed forces to the fishing town on the
southern Mindanao island. Police are now on heightened alert across the country and authorities
have put all airports on red alert.
The deadliest explosion, at a busy shopping mall near to the city hall on Sunday, killed 14 people
and injured 55.
Police arrested two men, who claimed to be with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front, in
connection with the bombings, but officials said they are focusing their attention on the Philippine
extremist group Abu Sayyaf.
In a call to a Philippine radio station, a man claiming to be a member of the Abu Sayyaf, said the
group -- thought to be linked to Osama bin Laden's al Qaeda network -- was responsible for the
weekend bombings. Abu Sayyaf has described a wave of bombings in the country's southern city
of General Santos as a mere "warm up" and promised "more carnage".

An advance team of 25 U.S. Special Forces troops has arrived in the southern Philippines, the
first element of a joint U.S.-Philippine effort to rout out the extremist Muslim guerrilla group Abu
Sayyaf, according to U.S. military sources.
Although the Americans will be armed, Philippine officials said there were no plans for them to
take a direct combat role.
The infusion of new equipment and training for the Philippines is part of a $4.2 billion security
assistance package from the United States, aid that was approved after September 11.
In a separate development, the Philippine armed forces said it will receive five UH-1H (Huey)
helicopters as military surplus from the United States later this month.

U.S. Special Forces in the Philippines are moving into a new a stage of training that country's
military forces, putting the U.S. troops a step closer to possible involvement in jungle fights with
terrorists, a Pentagon spokesman has said.
Pentagon officials say putting U.S. troops into the jungle with the Philippine troops would have a
two-pronged advantage:
First, U.S. soldiers would play an advisory role that would offer real-time field intelligence and
combat advice to the Philippine soldiers during missions.
Second, U.S. troops would be able to asses the abilities of the Philippine soldiers for training in
the future.

An American hostage held in the Philippines by Muslim separatist guerrillas has pleaded for his
life, and that of his wife, in a radio address granted him by his captors.
Martin Burnham on Monday appealed to Philippine President Gloria Arroyo over DXRZ-RMN
radio to halt an intensified search-and-rescue offensive against the Abu Sayyaf, saying he and his
wife may be killed.
"I'm very tired and weak and frightened. We have lost a lot of weight " Burnham said, adding that
they were being made to sleep on the ground. "I'm always tied or kicked. I'm always in the center
of the group. I'm always chained. I'm always tied so I cannot escape."
"The message of the Abu Sayyaf is that Americans everywhere are in danger. We have been
targeted because we are Americans and I think there is a possibility they can execute us if things
do not go according to their desire," Burnham said.

US Army deploys more troops against Abu Sayyaf guerrillas in Mindanao:
About 1,000 more troops will be deployed to battle Al Qaeda linked rebels on a southern
Philippine island where at least 22 soldiers and guerrillas died in a clash last week, officials said
Monday.
The offensive aimed at wiping out an Abu Sayyaf rebel group on Sulu Island was focused on a
jungle region near the coastal town of Patikul, said Southern Philippine military forces chief Lt.
Gen. Ernesto Carolina. "This will be the last fight," he predicted.

Twenty one people died and 145 were injured after a bomb, reportedly planted in a backpack,
exploded in the airport's waiting area. About 80 people had gathered to greet passengers on a
plane that had just landed, officials said. A smaller bomb hit Tagum, north of Davao, shortly
afterwards, slightly injuring two people. On Wednesday, a blast hit a crowded store in the city of
Cotabato, also on Mindanao Island, while another hit a power transmission line, cutting electricity
to the southern part of the island for about an hour.
Authorities say the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) could be behind the blasts, and are
questioning five members of the rebel group. A MILF spokesman has already denied any
involvement.
